Excipients are nonactive ingredients often included in biological formulations to control physical properties such as viscosity or to enhance stability. The general mode of action for the small molecule excipients intended to reduce viscosity is to screen molecular interactions and produce desirable changes in the solution microstructure. However, the specific molecules used and their induced microstructural changes can vary significantly depending on the biological system.
