Continual Measurements of Silver Nanoparticle Ink Viscosity

Conductive inks are suspensions of metal nanoparticles, most commonly silver, dispersed in a solvent system. They are deposited by inkjet, aerosol jet, screen, and flexographic printing to form conductive traces for flexible circuits, RFID antennas, printed sensors, and photovoltaic contacts.

Viscosity governs how an ink behaves in every one of these processes, controlling jettability and drop formation, line resolution and edge definition, film thickness, and ultimately the conductivity of the printed feature. Because deposition occurs at high shear rates and the carrier solvents are volatile, viscosity must be characterized at process-relevant conditions in a system that does not allow the sample to change during the measurement.
