Ensure Stable Readings with Medical Grade Viscosity Standard MGVS
Follow our recommended procedures when working with medical grade viscosity standard (MGVS)
Allow medical grade viscosity standard (MGVS) to equilibrate temperature for 30 minutes before measuring.
Medical grade viscosity standard (MGVS) is a high-precision fluid with a certified, known viscosity at a specific temperature. It is used for the calibration of viscometers and rheometers, which is critical for any medical or pharmaceutical application where viscosity is a key parameter. To ensure that your MGVS standard remains stable and provides consistent viscosity readings week after week, do the following:
- Store MGVS in the fridge. This will inhibit microbial growth and degradation.
- Gently mix the MGVS by inverting the sealed bottle 5 times.
- When measuring MGVS, first remove its bottle from the fridge and leave it unopened at room temperature for at least 30 minutes.
This ensures more consistent viscosity readings. For this application brief, we use MGVS100 but there are MGVS20, MGVS60 options as well. Please refer to the plot.
The plot shows the viscosity of MGVS100 measured with the microVISC PRO equipped with a B05 chip. This MGVS100 is from a bottle that was recently removed from the fridge. Each data point (average of 7 repeats; error bars represent the standard deviation) corresponds to an aliquot taken from the bottle after x minutes since the bottle was removed from the fridge (4 °C). The bottle was gently mixed before each test. The viscosity readings are not consistent until at least 30 minutes have passed.
These results demonstrate that you should wait at least 30 minutes for the MGVS bottle to reach room temperature before opening it and measuring the viscosity.
