We performed intrinsic viscosity measurements on a series of dilute Tween 20 (polysorbate 20) solutions prepared in deionized water. The intrinsic viscosity values were then used to estimate the hydrodynamic radius, providing an approximation of the molecular size of individual Tween 20 molecules in solution.

 

To the best of our knowledge, this is the first reported estimation of Tween 20’s molecular size using intrinsic viscosity measurements, as well as the first reported intrinsic viscosity measurements of Tween 20 monomers. Existing literature predominantly reports on the size of micelles formed by Tween 20, rather than the size of individual molecules. In this study, we demonstrate that intrinsic viscosity measurements with VROC can be effectively used to characterize the molecular size of non-micellized surfactant solutions.
