Extensional Viscosity & Intrinsic Viscosity


Extensional vs. Intrinsic, When Each Applies

Extensional viscosity (also known as elongational viscosity) is measured by exposing a sample to extensional deformation and extensional shearing. This application can be significant on various industrial processes including but not limited to: 

  • Fiber spinning
  • Paint rolling
  • Bio-inks
  • Inkjet Printing
  • Spraying
  • Electrospinning
  • Enhanced oil recovery
  • Drag reduction
  • Food processing

Intrinsic viscosity is the value gathered when the viscosity increases as a result from adding an infinitesimal amount of solute to a solvent. Using intrinsic viscosity values, many of our customers estimate the hydrodynamic radius as well. To measure intrinsic viscosity values successfully, the viscometer used needs to be extremely accurate and precise.
